Princess Dina Mired of Jordan joins Vital Strategies as Special Envoy for Noncommunicable Diseases

March 8, 2021 (New York) –  Vital Strategies, a leading global health organization and trusted partner of governments and civil society organizations worldwide, today introduces Her Royal Highness Princess Dina Mired of Jordan as Special Envoy for Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs). A long-time global champion of NCD prevention, cancer control and women’s health, HRH Mired will work to accelerate the adoption of proven, cost-effective strategies that reduce NCDs and improve population health.

“I am honored to welcome Princess Dina, longtime advocate and passionate supporter of Vital Strategies’ mission to ensure that everyone, everywhere is protected by a strong public health system,” said José Luis Castro, president and CEO, Vital Strategies. “As Special Envoy, Princess Dina will be a voice for action, especially around proven strategies to protect consumers from the unhealthy foods, alcohol, and tobacco that drive NCDs – the leading global killer. Princess Dina brings unwavering determination and broad experience in cancer control and NCDs to the effort to ensure that governments prioritize sensible prevention measures that reduce NCDs, empower consumers and protect youth. Our work together means we bring closer a world where people are living longer, better lives.”

“NCDs like cancer, diabetes and heart disease have cut too many bright futures short. My family faced the fear of cancer in a loved one. With smart and responsible action, we can make sure millions fewer families have to confront the unthinkable loss of a child, parent or friend. We have the knowledge and the tools that can make most NCDs a thing of the past,” said Princess Dina Mired. “The COVID-19 pandemic has brought new urgency as one in five people are at an increased risk of severe COVID-19 due to NCDs. As Vital Strategies’ Special Envoy, I will continue to cast light on how we can curb the drivers of NCDs, such as unhealthy foods, alcohol and tobacco, and advocate for policies that prioritize prevention. I am proud to join Vital Strategies in this official capacity.”

In her capacity as Special Envoy, Princess Dina will work to ensure Vital Strategies’ efforts to tackle NCDs is at the top of the global health agenda. Over the coming year, she will speak at organization-led events, provide timely commentary on urgent health priorities, and leverage her expertise as an NCD champion on key observances including World No Tobacco Day and World Cancer Day.

Princess Dina Mired is a mother of a cancer survivor and is a well-known and respected global advocate for Cancer Control and Noncommunicable Diseases. In 2018, at the UN high level meeting, she was named “Eminent Champion of the fight against Non-communicable diseases.” Her roles and recognitions highlight her work championing women’s issues including Honorary Chairperson of the Jordan Breast Cancer Program, Member of WHO Expert Group for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer and Member of the United Nations University High Level Advisory committee for Gender and Health Hub.

NCDs kill 41 million people every year and disproportionately affects people in poverty and women. On a national level, the burgeoning NCD epidemic holds threat to economic development, as a looming and chronic burden on health care systems. Vital Strategies works globally and with national and city governments to implement proven, effective policies and interventions to help prevent and reduce NCDs—such as working to support smoke-free places, and improving, among others.
