Dr. Tom Frieden, President and CEO of our Resolve to Save Lives initiative, presented the inaugural talk, which focused on government and society’s responsibility for the control of epidemics, cardiovascular disease and cancer. He sat with Dr. Sandeep (Sunny) Kishore to discusswhat’s being done to prevent these illnesses, and what steps can be taken to reduce their prevalence and impact.

Dr. Tom Frieden
President and CEO, Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies
Dr. Frieden is a physician trained in internal medicine, infectious diseases, public health and epidemiology. He began his public health career in New York City confronting the largest outbreak of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis to occur in the United States. He was then assigned to India, on loan from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he helped scale up a program for effective tuberculosis diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. Asked to return to New York City
to become Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s Health Commissioner,
he directed efforts to reduce smoking and other leading causes
of death that increased life expectancy by three years.
As Director of the CDC, Dr. Frieden oversaw the work that helped end the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. He now leads Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative that aims to save millions of lives from cardiovascular disease and make the world safer from epidemics.
Dr. Sandeep (Sunny) Kishore, Moderator
Faculty, Department of Health System Design and Global Health Director, Chronic Disease Action Center, Arnhold Institute for Global Health Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
Dr. Kishore is a physician and biomedical scientist trained in public health. His work has led to the addition of 10 treatments to the WHO Essential Medicines List for heart disease, diabetes, mental illness and cancers, and includes technical assistance on the selection and rational use of essential medicines at national and subnational levels. He is a consultant for Resolve to Save Lives on treatment access, including expanding global access to fixed-dose combinations for hypertension. He is currently a faculty member at the Arnhold Institute for Global Health (Chronic Disease Action Center), part of the Department of Health System Design and Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
