Honoring Musicians Lost to Overdose on Overdose Awareness Day

By Kyli Rodriguez-Cayro, Content Manager, Overdose Prevention Program

Prince, Janis Joplin, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Tom Petty: These are just some of the most influential, beloved musicians who died of overdose. In recognition of Overdose Awareness Day, Aug. 31, Vital Strategies has created a Spotify playlist to remember and honor these artists.

International Overdose Awareness Day first began in Australia over two decades ago to honor the lives of people lost to overdose and raise awareness about overdose prevention through community events and vigils held around the world.

In the United States, more than 40% of adults report knowing someone who has died from overdose, and more than 1 million lives have been lost since 2000. International Overdose Awareness Day is a call to action to create a future that places compassion, dignity and public health at the forefront of our response to the overdose crisis.

Music fosters and shapes communities by evoking powerful emotions and a sense of connection. Throughout history, music has ignited social change and served as an amplifier for human rights movements. This playlist commemorates the lives of 15 musicians who left an outstanding mark on our world and celebrates their art that continues to bring joy and inspiration into people’s lives.

While we grieve our loved ones lost to overdose, on International Overdose Awareness Day, and every day, communities around the world continue to advocate for common-sense health solutions to prevent these tragic deaths.
