Our Current Programs

• Tobacco Control

  Vital Strategies support to China’s tobacco control work can be traced back to 2008, when China held the Olympic Games for the first time. We have worked with national and sub-national partners in combating tobacco harm. It is well believed that Vital Strategies has made a positive contribution to China’s tobacco control efforts through policy development, advocacy, health education and various healthy lifestyle promotional activities. The most recent statistics show that the rate of adult smoking in China has declined from around 36% to around 23% over the past 20 years, meaning approximately 23 million fewer smokers. During the same period, there is a one‑third reduction in secondhand smoke exposure for the same period.

• Environmental Health

  Vital Strategies’ Environmental, Climate, and Urban Health department (ECUH) works in environmental health, committed to advancing knowledge of environmental health risks and driving the formulation and execution of solutions to address critical issues in the field.

  With public health at its core, the division works to improve environmental health conditions and enhance population health by reducing and controlling environmental risk exposures, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and other related measures. Our scope of work in China includes environmental and climate health monitoring and information system development, risk assessment and communication, air pollution control, lead poisoning prevention, and climate change adaptation strategies.

• Data for Health

  The Data for Health (D4H) Initiative aims to improve the quality of public health data and strengthen data use in health policymaking. The initiative has collaborated with more than 65 countries worldwide. In China, the initiative was launched in Shanghai in March 2016 and expanded in 2020 to Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shandong provinces. Through close collaboration with the provincial and municipal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the initiative has achieved significant results in strengthening the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems, and in strengthening capacities in data analytics, evidence-informed policymaking, as well as public communication. The initiative was successfully completed in June 2026, leaving a strong foundation for the ongoing use of high-quality health data to inform public health policy and practice in the country.
