Our Commitments

Gender Equity

Vital Strategies endorses the World Health Organization definition of gender and uses the term to refer to the socially constructed characteristics, norms, behaviors, and roles of women, men, girls, boys, varying across societies and over time. Our definition also includes the idea that gender exists across a spectrum and includes non-binary, third gender, transgender, and other experiences of gender. Gender hierarchies create inequalities that intersect with other forms of discrimination to influence a person’s health.

A Workplace Free from Discrimination, Harassment, Sexual Exploitation and Abus

Vital Strategies is committed to creating an inclusive and equitable workplace, employment practices and culture. Vital respects intersecting identities, fosters a sense of belonging, and encourages diverse views that enable employees to bring their true selves to work and to reach their full potential. Vital is also committed to supporting employees with disabilities through inclusive hiring practices and reasonable workplace accommodations.

Vital Strategies is committed to a professional work environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. Vital Strategies strictly prohibits harassment, discrimination, sexual exploitation, abuse, and any other act that causes injury or suffering of anyone. Vital acknowledges its responsibility to ensure that our employees, contractors, and programs do no harm to children.

Duty of Care

Vital Strategies has a moral and legal Duty of Care to ensure that reasonably foreseeable risks to employees and associated personnel* are identified; that employees and associated personnel are informed of and can voluntarily choose to assume or decline such risks; and that Vital Strategies provides the needed support, resources, information, and training to reasonably mitigate the risks to which they are exposed on behalf of Vital Strategies.

*Employees and associated personnel include all Vital Strategies employees, board members, independent contractors, interns and volunteers or others during the course of their work on behalf of Vital Strategies, in any location.
