Coordinating efforts and helping to implement proven interventions to improve road safety
We engage with national, state and city governments and agencies, as well as Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety partners, to provide technical support for governments’ efforts to improve road safety work in four areas: infrastructure, enforcement, communication and surveillance.
Vital Strategies serves as the main liaison connecting the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety’s partners, governments and city agencies and coordinates road safety work.
Together with cities and states, we recruit and manage over a hundred embedded coordinators across the globe, who provide day-to-day support in implementing the initiative’s work to improve road safety. We also support governments to develop comprehensive, long-term road safety plans and strategies using the Safe System approach, which relies on sustained government commitment as well as collaboration to improve road safety.
Support governments to strengthen road safety legislation
Vital Strategies supports governments’ efforts to adopt new road safety legislation and improve existing policy frameworks.
We provide technical support to governments through political engagement, legal analysis, policy writing and public awareness raising. We also work with governments to pass comprehensive road safety legislation that addresses key risk factors, including speeding, drink driving, seat-belt and motorcycle helmet wearing, and child restraint use, and develop and deliver high-impact, evidence-based road safety interventions designed to strengthen road safety policies.
Saving lives in Colombia
Bogotá’s reduction of urban speed limits has become one of Latin America’s leading examples of evidence-based speed management. On roads where the 50 km/h limit was combined with automated enforcement, an estimated 268 lives were saved between 2020 and 2023.
