This new study from Vital Strategies and the Environment Agency of DKI Jakarta has revealed the health and economic burden of air pollution in Jakarta. It has been published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Tobacco control works. Since 2007, global smoking rates have fallen from 22.7% to 17.5%. Global cigarette sales have also plummeted, with 750 billion fewer cigarettes sold in 2021 compared to 2012, and 57 countries have implemented smoke-free laws.

The report draws from an 18-month process evaluation which began soon after DATRA went into effect. The research team surveyed and interviewed key decision makers from Oregon involved in policymaking, governing, and the criminal legal system about implementing the law.

The state of Michigan is slated to receive nearly $800 million over 18 years as part of the opioid litigation settlements, and approximately half of these funds will go directly to county and municipal governments, providing an opportunity to strengthen evidence-based, accessible resources in local communities.

To incentivize investment in syringe service programs (SSPs) and naloxone distribution, Vital Strategies is matching county opioid settlement dollars committed for these services in the selected counties.

To address the surge in overdose deaths in communities of color, public health organization Vital Strategies is providing grant funding to community-based organizations and partnerships led by Black, Indigenous and people of color.

The Summit will bring together mayors and other city leaders from the Partnership for Healthy Cities global network to discuss strategies to combat the global burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries.

India has strong policies restricting tobacco advertising promotion and sponsorship, yet ‘surrogate marketing’ has been known to be used on traditional media channels to indirectly promote tobacco products.
