In low- and middle-income countries, gaps in health data mean preventable deaths and disease often go unaddressed. Through Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Data for Health Global Grants Program, Vital Strategies partners with government experts to strengthen the data systems needed to close those gaps and promote evidence-based policymaking, providing technical partnership along the way—with every solution designed and led locally.
The Global Grants Program has committed $16 million to improving public health and population data systems and promoting data use across low- and middle-income countries.
Our support strengthened public health data quality and operational capacity in 60 countries.
The Global Grants Program helped improve more than 600,000 birth and death records, expanding legal identity coverage and the vital statistics governments rely on to make public health decisions.
We supported 50 health equity projects across 31 countries that are identifying and closing data gaps to reduce health disparities.
Why It Matters
When health data is incomplete or goes unused, resources flow to the wrong places—and preventable deaths go uncounted and unaddressed. The Global Grants Program works with countries to strengthen the data systems, with solutions built and led by local teams, that make evidence-led health policy possible.
How We Work
The Bloomberg Philanthropies Data for Health Global Grants Program partners with local teams through a competitive selection process to implement targeted projects addressing their most pressing data system and public health priorities. Each initiative is led by national experts, grounded in local context and supported by technical exchange among the Global Grants Program, partner organizations and country governments.
Three principles guide every project: country ownership, targeted action and global collaboration. Each initiative reflects national priorities, pursues clear and achievable goals, and is strengthened by regional knowledge exchange among countries navigating similar challenges.
