July 12, 2022. Village of San Luis Alto Picuaito (Nasa Indigenous community), Putumayo. Marleny Mesa Trompeta (33, center right) and her husband Andres Efrain Noscue (34, right) take part in a verbal autopsy with members of the Colombia Rural Vital team three months after their three-month-old son Eliad Noscue Mesa died due of heart and breathing complications. Their son was delivered and born through the help of a midwife in their village. After a few weeks of being born, Marleny and Andres noticed their son had a deformity in his skull and took their son to the nearest hospital in the town of Villagarzon, a 2.5-hour bus ride through muddy roads. Their son was refused medical attention at the hospital because their child was not registered. Marleny blames this lack of first medical care for his son’s medical complications that lead to his death. “If the hospital [in Villagarzon] had admitted him on the first visit, my baby would have lived.” Photo Credit: Juan Arredondo for The New York Times Magazine.
