Jurema Werneck é ativista negra e médica pela Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), autora e doutora em Comunicação e Cultura pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Nascida no Morro dos Cabritos, Copacabana, acumula uma longa trajetória de luta no movimento de saúde da população negra e dos direitos humanos.
Em 2017, assumiu a Direção Executiva da Anistia Internacional Brasil, uma das maiores e mais importantes organizações de direitos humanos do mundo. Jurema integra o Conselho Diretor da Global Fund for Women e é Presidenta do Conselho de Administração do Fundo Brasil de Direitos Humanos.
Após se graduar, trabalhou na Secretaria Municipal de Assistência Social do Rio de Janeiro e no Centro de Articulação de Populações Marginalizadas. É fundadora da ONG Criola, que desde 1992 atua pela garantia dos direitos das mulheres negras no país. Em 2000, organizou o livro “Saúde das Mulheres Negras: Nossos Passos Vêm de Longe” (em conjunto com Evelyn C. White e Maria Luísa Mendonça).

Jurema Werneck is a Black activist, an author, and a physician. She did her medical studies at the School of Medicine of the Fluminense Federal University and holds a Ph.D. in Communication and Culture from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Born in Morro dos Cabritos, Copacabana, she has a long history of struggle in the movement for the health of the Black population and for human rights.
In 2017, she took over as Executive Director of Amnesty International in Brazil, one of the largest human rights organizations in the world. Jurema is part of the Board of Directors of Global Fund for Women and is President of the Council of the Brazil Human Rights Fund.
After graduating, she worked at the Municipal Social Assistance Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro and at the Center for Articulation of Marginalized Populations. She is the founder of the NGO Criola, which has worked since 1992 to guarantee the rights of Black women in Brazil. In 2000, she organized, with Evelyn C. White and Maria Luísa Mendonça, the book “Saúde das Mulheres Negras: Nossos Passos Vêm de Longe” (Black Women\’s Health: Our Steps Have Come from Far Away).
